Kazhi Kadaimadai Farmers Federation (KKFF) was founded as a formally registered not for profit trust in 2006, as an outcome of post tsunami response programme (the region was hit by Indian Ocean Tsunami in December 2004) implemented by The Covenant Centre for Development, a non-governmental organization of Tamilnadu, India for the rehabilitation of the affected coastal farming communities in the Nagapattinam district of Tamilnadu. The federation is managed by the board of trustees elected by the farmers communities affiliated to it. The major areas of work include institution building, risk reduction through appropriate technologies, microfinance, infrastructure development and developing agricultural entrepreneurs.

Legal Status:
KKFF was promoted in 2005 as a farmers federation but was registered as a Trust under Indian Trusts Act 1882 in India, (Registration No. 161 / 2006) in 2006.

Mission:
KKFF mission is to create community based farmers organisations owned and managed by the people to address their own development needs and issues by involving grassroots level farmers group through a continuous process of mutual trust, support, interaction and responsibility sharing which facilitate the capacity building among themselves.

Experience in Agriculture Finance:
KKFF has existed as a rotating savings and credit institution based on principles of SHG micro-credit organization since inception (2006). The institution received a rotating credit fund as part of relief support to reclaim salinated agriculture land. KKFF raised bank loan and circulated credit amongst members to reclaim salinated land as well as re-start agriculture production. KKFF is a farming community owned "Agriculture Finance" institution. The credits provided by KKFF could be used only for the purpose of agriculture production and value addition. Over last three years KKFF has built its portfolio of investment from 18,31,292 INR (40695 USD) to 75,00,000 INR (1,66,667 USD), its members have increased from 203 to 586 across 36 groups in 12 villages. KKFF has institutional financing partnership with the Grameen Foundation, Concern Worldwide and The Canara Bank.

Affiliations:

ICRISAT: It's a non-profit research organisation and a part in a consortium of International Agriculture Research Network. ICRISAT is located in India with the mandate to improve people's livelihoods in crop-livestock-tree production system in the semi arid tropics through integrated genetic and natural resource management. ICRISAT does this by making food crops more productive, nutritious and affordable to the rural poor, diversifying options in utilising staple food crops, developing tools and techniques to reduce risks and manage the natural resource base and strengthening support systems for rural farm communities and developing options to diversify income generating activities. Partnership based research for impact, gender sensitivity; capacity building and enhanced knowledge and technology exchange are integral to this mandate. ICRISAT is partnering with KKFF in the promotion of seed entrepreneurs.

The Covenant Centre for Development (CCD): CCD is a developmental organisation based in Madurai, Tamilnadu, India and working with rural communities of seven states in India. As a strong believer in the promotion of people's organisations, it strives to build the capacity of community based organisations to initiate and sustain need based development initiatives. Now CCD is working with other NGO's, mainstream service providers, resource organisations to contribute towards promoting secured livelihoods for the people. It's working with more than 20,000 families directly and other 30,000 families indirectly. The major areas of work are microfinance, promotion of community enterprises, conservation, health and disaster rehabilitation.
